Notices of rent increases
Effective January 1, 2020, California law requires a 90 days’ written notice when rental property owners increase a tenant’s rent more than 10 percent. Rent increases of 10% or less continue to require 30 days’ written notice.
Note that at properties subject to AB 1482, rent increases are limited to 5% + CPI (but no more than 10%) over any 12-month period.
Few properties remain exempt from AB 1482 single-family rentals owned by a natural person, condominiums, owner-occupied duplex rentals, and new construction built within the last 15 years. The owner or property manager must include a notice that the unit is exempt from AB 1482 to increase rental rates.
